A whale burial

A whale burial

The huge female sperm whale was buried yesterday afternoon in a shallow grave at the fish cemetery of the Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology (ZSCMST) in Barangay Sta. Barbara, this city.

Using backhoes, personnel of the General Services Office dug a huge hole and removed the ropes and straps tied around the carcass of the 52-footer (18 Meters) whale on the

flatbed of a 16-wheeler trailer truck during its burial.

Hundreds of curious residents again gathered at the school’s compound to have a last glimpse of the giant sea mammal, which according to City Veterinarian Dr. Mario Ariola is pregnant.

The dead sperm whale was spotted, already dead, at 6 a.m. about 1.5 nautical miles off the coast of Sacol Island by a boat of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources that came from Basilan Province. It was then towed by the BFAR to the ports of Zamboanga for proper disposition.
